WHAT IS THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

I AM NOT EVEN PRETENDING TO HAVE ANY KNOWLEDGE ON THIS I AM ASKING THIS QUESTION
i AM READING SOME SCRIPTURE ON IT AND HAD A CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE ABOUT IT YESTERDAY.

Acts 19:1-2 (New King James Version)
New King James Version (NKJV)

Acts 19
Paul at Ephesus
1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”

IS NOT THE HOLY SPIRIT WHAT LEADS US TO CHRIST IN THE FIRST PLACE AND DO WE NOT RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN WE ARE SAVED?

DO YOU HAVE TO SPEAK IN TONGUES TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

ARE TONGUES FOR TODAY?

IF TONGUES ARE FOR TODAY WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF IT.?

OK IM JUST ASKING THESE QUESTIONS BECAUSE I AM TRYING TO UNDERSTAND LIKE I SAID I DO NOT KNOW THAT MUCH ABOUT IT.

Mary,
I believe that the baptism (empowering) of the Holy Spirit is a different experience than the "indwelling" of the H.S at our conversion. Acts is full of examples, but in chapter 19 I believe Paul was asking these disciples if they had "received the baptism of the H.S. As disciples they had already experienced the indwelling of the H.S. at conversion.
The Baptism of the H.S. is for power to be a witness for Christ (Acts 1:8)
I could go on and on but I might blow up your comment section. I believe that the present day ministry of the Holy Spririt includes, among other things, the empowering, equipping, and spiritual gifts bestowed upon His followers. Some teach these things have ended, but you really can't back that stance up when you look at the entire New Testament. There are those who have gone to extremes, but we should never let the extremes keep us from the truth of what God has provided for us.
-Tongues are valid for today, but even Paul states that there are greater gifts (1Cor. 12-13-14)

A great book of balance in this subject is "Living Water" by Chuck Smith. It is a very balanced, solid teaching. Check it out.

If you have more specific questions, email my personally.

May the H.S have more control in all our lives!

Peace,
Pastor Steve

Mary,

These questions can be answered by going to www.biblebb.com. Theres a Q and A section where you can research all this. I have found this site very useful in the past for getting balances answers to important doctrinal issues.
I will send info to your e-mail.
(specifically your Q's).

When you are in the Calvary System,(and Pentecostal and Charismatic churches), they believe in the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, and Tongues for today.

The Baptists, and Reformed churches for the most part believe that the true gift of tongues have ceased, because we have the written word of God in all languages. CC's believe in another tongue that Paul warns against in 2 Corinthians. It usually causes much strife to debate these issues.
